UCIRI (Union of Indigenous Communities of the Isthmus Region) is a coffee cooperative that since 1982 has organized small farmers among four Indian peoples in southern Mexico. Today, UCIRI consists of more than 2,500 members in 49 different villages located in the beautiful mountain slopes of the state of Oaxaca.
UCIRI has been a partner in Sackeus the fair trade company since 2001.
It was at UCIRI that the trading principle was created through Francisco van der Hoff Boersma. Then called Max Havelaar, the first justice label (1988). The initiative quickly spread to other countries and developed into today’s global Fairtrade label.
“By developing fair trade, we have attacked the social injustices but also the problem of the earth’s survival. Everything is connected.”
